World Pacific

Last December, an earthquake measuring 7.1 on the coast of Taiwan severely damaged Asia submarine fiber-optic telecommunications circuits disrupt the entire continent.

Porcelain and Southeast Asia saw him fall for communications capacity between 2 and 10 per cent, and although part of the service has been diverted to other lines slow suicide fixed satellite transmissions, the PRC has yet to recover from the aftermath technology, people in mainland China are Wait referring to as the "World Wide.

Repair status is conflicting, with Chinese telecom officials publicly alternating between evasive ( "the work is slow due to difficult conditions'), objectionable (the repairs are made by other companies we commissioned") unrealistic and optimistic ( "some days"), quoted in the state-owned media.

International news sources cite more and likely date of completion and early March for a return to full capacity, perhaps due to what the World Service reports AFP concern as China, " relying on 19th century technology to solve a problem of the 21st century.

In an effort to downplay the crisis, hastily announced that China hopes to become in the largest Internet user in the world, overtaking the United States with an estimated 137 million users. That is an optimistic forecast for a country that has suffered cuts telecommunications nationwide since the new year.

In fact, Internet blackouts are nothing new to foreigners resident in the Republic, who are accustomed to limited access to overseas sites have been blocked by the institution of central government oversight of the Web, commonly known as The Great Firewall of China.

But the latest online paralysis resulting from recent natural and technological disasters have undoubtedly affected most of international business in mainland China, many of which rely on a strong line of communications and B2B transactions to stay above water internationally. Even multinational conglomerates Google, Microsoft and Yahoo, already struggling in the Asian market, now met regularly with the "can not be displayed" time errors.

By contrast, China e-commerce giants just do not understand what all the fuss. China News Service reports that amidst the first weeks Internet cuts, China-based ISP had a uptime of 99 percent as the country's biggest web companies, including Sina, Baidu, Alibaba, and Tencent Tom saw his site traffic, and revenues are increasing.

But China's Internet-deprived expat community in Beijing to the Bund, the hope is, literally, in Verizon. A consortium of international telecom providers including China Telecom, CNC and the U.S. carrier Verizon have jointly invested 500 million dollars in the construction of a new Trans-Pacific Express (TPE) Cable Network connecting Mainland China directly with the United States.

The optical cable next-generation undersea system, expected to be completed in 2008, will run for the Asia and Pacific at 60 times the current capacity, making obsolete the damaged cables FNAL under the Taiwan Strait.

Undoubtedly, China easily paralyzed telecommunications infrastructure and prolonged consequences can blame the poor in forecasting and co-dependent on technology and is both a devastating episode of foreign companies in China and a chin check for a nation struggling to compete as a 21st century global player.

But if the realization of a bigger and better cross cable network Pacific has nothing to do with the cause of the delay, then foreign and Chinese companies alike will only have to wait much longer to resume a normal operating speeds.
