Uriah Heep
UFO VS. URIAH HEEP?

What do you think ? (WHY ?)

***Regardless of HEEP leaning towards Progression and UFO into Space aspect ….

I had/have this argument with my friend over who’s the more influential and more creative of the two . I say UFO touches more nerves of mine even thoug I adore the great HEEP , yet UFO are the better Hard Rock / Metal pioneers to me .

BQ: UFO’s “Come Away Melinda” or URIAH HEEP’s “Come Away Melinda ?

Oh, well done !! You totally blocked first argument!! —

UFO = HardRock/Metal and U. Heep = HardRock/Prog

Dang!! Now I have to actually “think” :) )

I have to work this one out, as I go along, so please, bear with me…

1. The addition of an accomplished Keyboardist —

– gives HEEP an edge.

2. I love Mick Box, but M.S. is just simply more accomplished on solos. Mick Bolton gets Props for some great ideas.

edge = UFO

3. Byron is a better singer… a bit “glammy” but Phil Mogg was perfect for UFO and didn’t throw his life away, like the unfortunate Byron. I am not a Fan of Wetton’s vocals (though an excellent Bassist) and the follow-up singers that HEEP had.

= edge UFO

4. Bassist — UFO’s Pete Way & HEEPs best, Gary Thain (another great bassist, who screwed up) about equal.

Both could play!!

5. Kerslake & Parker — both did outstanding work for each band.

It was nice to see Dunbar join UFO for a while, though.

6. LIve Albums –

Are you kidding me??

“U.H. Live” & “Strangers in the Night” are 2 of the Greatest Live albums of the 1970s — PERIOD!! :)

7. Best Album between both Bands (for me) =

“Force It” — UFO — one of the most Perfect HardRock/Metal albums, ever !! — and PWNS ANY “Heep” album.

8. — early-Discography –

UFO –

UFO 1 — “meh”
Flying — excellent space rock (though Hawkwind will always own that Genre, imo)
Phenomenon — excellent
Force It — my fave (as already stated)
No Heavy Petting — excellent
Lights Out — excellent
Obsession — very good, but starting to lose their edge, imo. “Cherry” is my fave song from that.

U. HEEP –

Uriah Heep — excellent
Salisbury — excellent
Look at Yourself — excellent
Demons and Wizards — excellent
The Magician’s Birthday — excellent
Sweet Freedom — excellent (there best, in the long run of re-listening to all of them, repeatedly)
Wonderworld — okay, but starting to fail…, imo
Return to Fantasy — okay, but listenable
High and Mighty — okay, but listenable
Firefly — hmmm….

9. What was the Question again?? >:((

Okay — game time –

With all the plusses for UFO (including better RIFFS, which I love — “Heep’s” Box, preferred “thicker riffls” — good, but not like UFO — and Hensley’s Hammond, probably added to this “thickness”)

Again — with all the “edges” that I have given UFO —

***I still like Uriah Heep better***

I know that does not make sense — but, that is the feeling that I am still “left with.”

Maybe it is because — overall — I think that Heep had MORE tracks, than UFO, that I like.

Maybe a question of Volume??

Now — YOU stated in your Q —

“UFO — Hard Rock / Metal pioneers”

Even though in 1970 – I would place “Uriah Heep” over “UFO 1″ –

I totally agree, that UFO did more as Hard Rock / Metal pioneers.

However, I have never considered HEEP “Metal” — but “Prog”

So, it really comes down to which band is My Favorite.

Loving them both — if “forced” –

I have to stick with HEEP for their overall “body of work” :)

It’s kinda like Deep Purple — the Keyboards, take a lot away from a being a “PURE” Metal band, even though UFO used ‘boards from time-to-time.

Comparing Deep Purple to Uriah Heep, would be a more logical argument, to me.

But, against UFO — I would compare early Scorps & J. Priest, etc.

Just my opine.

Enjoyable debate, though !! :)

BQ — UFO’s version.

Demons and wizards and bears, oh my! After finding their musical stride with 1971’s Look at Yourself, Uriah Heep followed up a year later with this, their first foray into the lyrical realm of dungeons, dragons, and whatnot. David Byron’s intermittent falsetto is in full effect by the time the chorus comes thundering in on heavy hits such as “Easy Living” and “Traveler in Time.” But the ‘ard ‘n’ ‘…
