The trumpet has always been an integral part of the traditional big band, both as principal and as a solo instrument. The section consists of four players, with the first chair be described as the "lead" the chair and the second part generally regarded as the "jazz" chair. Maynard played trumpet lead and was introduced as a virtuoso of the high note at a young age. He later went on to lead his own groups large and small for over half a century.
