"There's nothing like experience itself" I'm not sure exactly who said those powerful words, but have an effervescent truth. I learned this the hard way when I went for my first degree black belt. The only type of physical training I did at that time to the forms and fighting. When the day of the test came, I nearly fainted and I needed air. All things happen for a reason and I think that momentous day was a turning point for me.
Training traditional martial arts mean using your forms, katas or Hyungs, kicks, punches or blocks as the only means of training. This approach helps tremendously insofar as the development of adequate and fair performance for learning techniques. However, your body needs to be powerful and explosive to be able to offer technical devastating and fierce. At this point tradition and modern education must meet.
Imagine if we still use the horse and carriage today as a means transport. It would take forever to go to a faraway place, right? The same applies to the martial arts and combat sports, there must be a mixture of old and new, instead of isolating two of the other. Tradition is necessary to understand the martial movements with their level of basic training is needed to improve modern movements. A perfect example is the transformation of Bruce Lee from a traditional trainer to a scientific coach. Do not discard all traditional training, but what followed was useful and necessary. Its transformation covering the entire practice of martial arts today. This man is a true inspiration!
Another great thing about the mix both approaches is its ability to simplify techniques. Think of the innovations of the bag, shields, pads and tools approach another target. All on strike as kicking, punching and shoving have greatly improved due to the accuracy, timeliness and power can be practiced without the need to hurt to training partners. Resistance training, weight training, isometric exercises in the water training and plyometrics, among other new school accessories have changed the martial arts world forever.
Finally, by adopting an approach of the old school like meditation, visualization can be practiced to increase physical force or internal practice when we are not able to participate in class due to illness or injury. What we can use in martial arts, both physically and mentally are amazing technologies because they teach us how to use our potential in ways you never thought possible. Instead of creating the opposition to the choice of approaches, old or new, we must learn from both, as the yin and yang coexist with each other. This is the balance of life and this is the balance of the martial arts.
