The Stig is the test pilot of unidentified vehicles on the favorite Sunday night BBC Top Gear. So far unbeaten, The Stig lap times are impressive.
However, he was very close to being beaten on Sunday for the Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton. Hamilton made a lap in 1 minute 44.6 seconds in a position wet and oily. This came in a mere .2 of a second behind El 1 minutes Stigs and 44.4. And his performance was in dry conditions.
Lewis Hamilton has thrown the gauntlet to The Stig with a challenge for both riders to compete in the same weather conditions.
Fans of Top Gear, no doubt, have joined the debate about the true identity of The Stig. Bookmakers William Hill have Stunt Driver Russ Swift as the hot favorite at odds of 2 / 1 with Damon Hill at 4 / 1. Ben Collins is a little known rider who has appeared on Top Gear as part of a parachuting stunt and this led to speculation about whether or not The Stig secret. However, the bookies believe that in some over 6 'tall, Collins does not comply with the law.
Maybe they're wrong. Personally, I think that The Stig is a woman. I mean, just look to driving skills, coupled with the fact that there is a clear lack of accidents. It is well known that women have far fewer accidents than men. Maybe your Sandy or Togsvig Dame Judi Dench? Well, anything is possible. Maybe that's why they will not reveal the identity of The Stig, because it would dispel all the myths about women drivers!
The Stig has set some of their best lap times in the BMW. With one minute 26 seconds surprisingly fast 1 in the BMW Z4M, closely followed by 1 minute and 28 seconds in a BMW M3 CSL, this has to be one of his favorite cars. With its smooth handling, cornering precision and total power, all tested by The Stig BMW have come in less than 1 minute and 32 seconds per lap.
Viewers of Top Gear this week have also been among the first witness to test drive a new BMW is currently developing. This BMW is unique in the fact that onboard computers can "learn" a route and then the unit itself. After just a drive around Track by presenter Jeremy Clarkson, the car was able to memorize the route and then take over.
Looking petrified, Clarkson, release the wheel, took off feet off the pedals as the BMW and screamed off, braking at the last minute in the corners. The BMW completed the lap, leaving Clarkson in one piece. However, the feeling consensus was that it would be very difficult to trust it on the road. Not because of any problem with the car, but simply human nature to want to have control of that power.
So, Top Gear team, Hamilton make the challenge more interesting. Let's see The Stig take Lewis Hamilton and a woman driver, in dry conditions in a BMW.
