Happy birthday and welcome back an old friend, the 45 rpm disc officially turned 60 years old on March 31. British trade magazines report 45rpm single song that they're selling more records than their counterparts in CD and many American bands are now releasing music through this medium historical audio.

The 45rpm record was first introduced in 1949 by RCA Records as a smaller, more durable replacement for heavy shellac 78-based in the records of the time. The 45 was created by RCA as a competitive move against a record of its rivals, Columbia, which had just introduced the new microgroove 33 1 / 3 rpm LP. The number 45 was 78 and taking 33 new Columbia subtracting equal 45. Record companies and consumers face an uncertain future As to which format would survive the 78rpm or 45rpm, in what is known as the "War of the speeds." In 1949, the Capitol and Decca began broadcasting format new LP and RCA relented and released her first LP in January 1950. However, the 45 rpm was gaining in popularity and 45s Columbia issued its first in February 1951. Soon other companies labels were the massive consumption of appeal allowed and the new format in 1954 over 200 million had been sold 45s.

Thus on 31 March 1949 RCA Victor released "Texarkana Baby" b / w "Roses" by Eddy Arnold. The 45 first hit the Billboard charts was "A – You're Adorable "by Perry Como, contained in the lists of 7 May 1949. The following week, the biggest hit of the year appeared on the Billboard charts -" Riders In The Sky (A Cowboy Legend) "by Vaughn Monroe. The first 45rpm records were monaural and stereo sound and became more prevalent and popular in the 1960s, almost all 45rpm records were made in stereo.

The historical significance and commercial 45rpm disk has changed over time, technological advances in music recorded and according to the audience of artists and genres. In general, 45rpm records were more important for music acts to sell music younger audiences (mostly teenagers) who tend to have limited financial resources and shorter attention. That said, the golden age of 45 was in the 1950s and 1960s in the early development of rock music. Artists that are affordable and allow freedom of the release of a single song, unlike a LP set. By contrast, some singles helped launch sales of the albums that the musicians were promoting.

The duration of the songs too have evolved. In the 1950s it was common for songs to be two to two and half minutes long and in the 1960s, the three single minute became the standard. This length is very convenient and fits into the AM radio format very well. Millions of demo recordings were sent to radio stations with specific instructions as to what song is supposed to be the 'hit single, "although there were some DJs who played the' B side 'and the songs became hits. Elvis Presley was among the first artists to release the 'double-sided single ", which means that both songs ultimately end up on the lists. The Beatles followed suit and also one of the first recording artists to push the envelope, so to speak, and usually during the three-minute songs rule. Of Indeed, there are some singles that had to be edited by the radio stations and shortened to suit your particular format. 1972 Don McLean "American Pie" is an example, the single was divided into two parts in 45. The Beatles broke new ground in 1968 with his epic seven more minutes, "Hey Jude".

Sales of 45s were recorded in the registration lists in most countries into a Top 40 format and the graphics were often published in magazines (Billboard), TV (American Bandstand) and radio programs often had the Top 40 countdown shows (Casey Kasem).

Today, it still made 45s rpm, but in a smaller scale for decades. Indie bands, r & b artists and punk bands love the format, but allows the music to reach your audience objective and, after all these years, are still highly sought by collectors. Happy birthday to an old friend, here's to many more!
